Default Mini-mod weekend: rain sensor, mats, cubbies, radar, oil pan (pics)

Here are the things I added this weekend: 996 logo Lloyd mats, replaced the CD holder with a cubby and ran the aux cable into it, replaced the oil pan and completed oil change, replaced ash tray with cubby, and added a rain sensing wiper sensor. Everything was pretty simple.

For the radar, I ended up running the wire down the a-pillar to a connector I found in the center console (I had to get in there anyway to run the rain sensor wire). I removed the pillar to get the wiring tucked in nicely and out of the way and everything looks great. The rain sensor actually looks factory and works well. I took a short video and can upload to youtube but basically it shows me sprinkling water on the windshield and the wipers going when I do that.

I did the same with my detector cord (down the A pillar. My detector uses the Bluetooth interface, so the cord going to the detector is much more substantial than a normal power cord).

I went with the aluminum/steel mirror mount, since suction-cupping stuff to your windshield in CA is verboten. I've never been stopped for this transgression, but I figured I might as well do away with one potential reason for drawing Johnny Law's attention.

I like the mod in the bottom cubby.

How long was the oil pan swap?

I looked at that mount and do like it pretty well, but I sat in the car and decided I didn't want something BELOW the mirror in my field of view. If not for taking up that space, I'd be all over it.

Oil pan was about 5 minutes to remove, about an hour to clean old gasket material off of the sump and pan itself (probably faster if I'd used my buddy's rotary but I didn't know he had it til I was done), then another 15 min to install it back on the car using Loctite 5900 (messy stuff!) and removable Loctite for each of the bolts. Another 10 minutes opening bottles of Joe Gibbs DT40 oil and dumping them in and some test driving and I was done. I changed the filter also and plan to get the spin-on filter adapter from LN prior to the next oil change.

I do want to get rid of these Magnaflow mufflers or at least have some stockers on hand to swap in/out when I want to take a long trip. They sound incredible but are pretty loud.

All of those are good upgrades, and most fairly simple to do, but make a huge difference in usability. I need to drop my oil pan to inspect and clean it. Nothing wrong with a little bonding with your Porsche.

I dropped the pan on Jake Raby's request. He just refreshed the engine before selling the car to me and suggested I inspect "just to be safe." Everything looked excellent so in went the DT40 and off I go to get some miles on before hitting the track, hopefully late summer or early fall.
