Actually, I don't have a 996. I have a Boxster S that Darin already modified the exhaust for. He also did the mufflers on my past 993 turbo. Anytime I come across a good buy on Craigslist for Porsche exhaust I forward it to Darin and ask him if he wants them. He wanted these!

Ahhhh, finally got my Fister D mufflers put on late this afternoon/evening, can't believe it still took me almost 4 hours even though I had taken the original mufflers and exhaust tips off last year so there were no rusty/seized fasteners to deal with, I wasn't rushing as I kind of enjoy working on this car.
I did spend an inordinate amount of time fighting with the exhaust tip clamps, these things are a royal PIA to say the least, probably added at least 1/2 hour to the work.
Of course I went for a drive right afterwards, no doubt everyone around you will know you mean business if you hammer the throttle, the sound gets louder as the RPM builds up, it's more pronounced in lower gears as the RPM rushes towards the redline.
The level of the exhaust sound is easily controlled through throttle input and gear selection, as everyone has commented, it does not drone, quiet at cruising speed/RPM, but announces your presence with the right combination of throttle input and RPM range.
I also suspect it will sound noticeably louder to others behind you than inside the cabin of the car, so keep that in mind with who may be around/behind you and not draw the unwanted kind of attention.
Oh it's a blast going through tunnels and underpasses!

No, you can use either the 3.4 or 3.6 cans for your MKI. The only caveat is that if you have a Tip, you'll need cans that have the accordion folds which came with MK1 Tip cars and all MKII cars.
