A few months ago during the summer during start up after sitting all night a puff of white smoke came out of the tailpipes, lasted about 2 seconds. Thick smoke I thought WTF. Never happened again until yesterday. I was coming off a clover leaf and clear ahead of traffic so I accelarated prob around 5k on the tach I got a big puff of smoke. I mean thick smoke. Came out of the throttle and pushed in the clutch and slowed and slowly released the clutch and a little more smoke not much then nothing again until start up this morning. It runs fine otherwise. All the gauges are normal. No leaks, drips smooth running engine even at idle. All mx up to date. 2002 911 with 63k on the odometer. Oil is right in the middle on the drip stick. I had a volkwagen vanigon do the same thing years back. Anybody have a clue?

Either: oil over-filled or bad AOS.

Probably nothing major.

see it on the track fairly regularly - brief plumes of smoke - then nothing
We think the cars have Indian heritage that requires periodic smoke signals to the motherland

do a quick check for "bad AOS": while car is running, remove the oil filler cap, then replace after a few seconds. If cap is hard to remove + car's idle gets rough while cap is off = most likely bad AOS.

I had your symptoms, I was chasing.... I had put a brand new AOS, but it wasnt that. Chased it down to this... a crack in an O ring on the cam sensor... I believe it was pinched at the factory and finally gave way. Not likely its your prob, but just throwing it out here.

AOS is not bad to DIY if you take your time and dont try to hurry.

OK. Did the test descibed above and sure enough, cap hard to get off and rough idle. BTW havent seen any smoke since the last time 3 weeks ago or so. Now just for the record. What is the AOS?
The only thing I can find in the shop manual is the Air and oil separator? And since I have someone attention. What is an Indy shop? My applogies in advance but my automotive background is classic mustangs 20 years followed by 3 years of Toyota/Lexus 2JZ-GTE. I've owned my 02 996 for 6 months and still learning the lingo. Thats for the responses!!

You got the AOS right - Air Oil Separator. Indy = independent mechanic - not Porsche dealer.

It seems like i may have the same issue. There is oil on the underside of some of the black throttle body air tubes and i had the big puffs of smoke yesterday.
It smoked for a little bit afterwards also.


I replaced the one on my boxster and i am sure this one will need it too.

I want to make sure that i am understanding this; there is only one aos in the car. For some reason i thought i saw something about two of them.

Mine went at around 60k. No smoke but leaked coolant (should call it an Air-Oil-Coolant Seperator). $1100 at my Indy. Seems to be a common failure at your mileage.
