Why do people look down on the 996?

Happy New Year! Long Time...
I put about 3K miles on the TT last year so not a lot of time behind the wheel. The 993 is more raw and more notciable with its shorter wheelbase. I found out that it can be a handful on wet roads with leaves on the ground.

996s are much more forgiving and handles better. It is just a much easier car to drive.
There will be mods here and there because I am still enjoying the car as is. I am going to take my time as this is more car than I am a driver for a while. If I decide to throw ridiculous money at it, it will probably get sent to RUF in Germany and then be done with it.
Put your 86 Targa together yet? I am itching for a ride..

yeah, you need alot of seat time in that car... but when you do get to drive it well, I rather just sit in the passenger seat.
As for the Targa... yeah she's almost put together..... one day.

Down to the metal repaint, stock color (meteor gray). My kids call it my "lego" set.

lol. Thanks roadsession. Although my wife just informed that the movie Cars is really history and it would make my car look too dated.
I guess I'll have to order a set of Dectane tail lights and make my 996 look a little more like a 997 :-)

I have an '03 Targa, and, while I'm not normally much of a fan of non-OEM exterior appointments, I installed Dectane, 997-style LED taillights last summer, and, along with LED brake lights, it really updates the look of the car.
In fact, as I was leaving the Post Office today, a guy ran across the parking lot and motioned me to roll down my window. He asked, "Is this an '09 or '10?" I smiled and said, " It's an '03." He was shocked and asked, "Just how much work did you put into this car?" He couldn't believe that it was simply the 997-style taillights that were throwing him. These 996 cars still have the Porsche DNA.
Of course, he then proceeded to warn me about IMS issues, which I obviously know all about, but I got a kick out of the fact that someone who seemed to know a reasonable amount about Porsches didn't realize that it was an old 996, at least from seeing its side and rear. The 996 II headlights probably would have given it away, had he viewed the car from the front, but I think they look contemporary in their own right.

I have never had anyone in person say anything about un-complimentary about my car.
Douchebags on forums are where our cars are looked down upon, and I don't really give a rat's azz about what the Internet thinks. Despite the horror of the non-ovoid headlights and the sheer audacity to make a 911 with a cooling system more sophisticated than a lawn mower, I think the 996 is an awesome car. I would not cross the street to pee on one of its detractors if they were on fire.
