I will not drive my car at less than 2000 revs cruising. Hardly ever use the radio. I can hear the engine is happier at 2500 and upwards. I dont need to see anything in writing. I am a good driver and know when to change. Thats probably a problem for drivers who only ever drove an automatic before getting a manual car. Its kind of built into us British and European drivers as Automatic cars are not liked in the UK. I would love to see a survey on which country has the highest IMS failures. relative to the amount of 996 sold in that country. My guess would be the States. And before yawl American drivers jump up screaming about that statement. Thats only IMHO... I am British BTW if you hadn't already guessed. But thats getting off the subject...

5th is good for 155 in my car, after that I usually have to turn right.

6th at 70 is fine if that's what you want to do. It's not going to damage anything.

In the regular 996, 75mph is at 3k rpm. I just did it on my street

The Colonies. (For Hurdi)

[QUOTE=Hurdigurdiman;10149444]I will not drive my car at less than 2000 revs cruising. Hardly ever use the radio. I can hear the engine is happier at 2500 and upwards.

Never really paid attention to rpm/speed as I drive. Read this yesterday so paid attention last night and quickly noticed that I just pay attention to how "happy" the engine feels, I call it the sweet spot. Anyway - since I paid attention I noticed that on the interstate I will be in 6th at 68mph or above yet often found myself cruising in 5th at that speed as well. Seems like I typically cruise somewhere between 2800 and 3200 rpm just because that's when she feels happy.

Of course, just like my 68 911 of days past, the faster she goes the happier her song.

Get a light weight flywheel. No need to ask the question after that :-)

I think I remember reading this in the manual somewhere, that 48mph is the lowest that the 6th gear can be shifted to. So I guess at 70mph it shouldn't do any harm to the engine.

I've found I get slightly better gas mileage if I stay out of 6th gear until 70 or so. The car drives fine if I'm in 6th around 55 or so, but it requires me to hold the gas pedal down a little more (IE, the engine is lugging ever so slightly).

Like a few other people have mentioned, these cars just really prefer to be at 3000 rpms or above.

Strange I see other posters quoting differant speeds at 3000 revs. Mine is right on 80mph at 3000 revs. I have 18 inch wheels which probably make the differance. I take it you all have 17 inch wheels? correct?
