Default Trans/diff/xfer fluid intervals?

Anyone have the interval info for changing the transmission (6mt), differential, and transfer case fluids?

60k miles or 5 years, whichever comes first. Many folks forget to change the M/T fluid. If it's never been done or you don't have a record of it being done previously, it's time. I believe many a trannies could have been saved if the fluid was changed before the bearing noises start. The 996 M/T has sealed bearings (like the IMS bearing) and I doubt the seals in those bearings are any better than the IMS bearing. Lubrication is good.....

I don't remember seeing trans/diff/xfer case fluid on the 60K service list. Somewhat unrelated, but ZF recommends fluid changes at 100K if you drive normally to 60K if you drive aggressively for transmission they supplied to audi (that claims it's a "lifetime" thing).

I would change it at least every 3 years just to be safe.

I'm sorry, but that is completely idiotic... especially for manual transmission.

KK is one of those owners who thinks spending 3x the amount you should on "preventative" maintenance is money well spent for peace of mind.

1k oil change intervals
Yearly power steering flushes
3 year tranny flush intervals
30k clutch replacements
...drives car 1500 miles a year.

Frankly, I have no problem with people who do that, it's their money. My only problem with it is how incredibly wasteful it is.

I hope I have all its history since we ordered it new in 00 (01 build)

65k is on the clock now and I'm about to get the 60k finally done so was wondering about the fluids too since every time its at the Indy they want to flush something

No drive train noises or issues besides the random bad shift, but that's more due to me not driving a MT regularly for 8 years (the 911 is hers, but I'm the one that drives it once a week or so to keep it healthy).

I changed mine at 70K just because I had the time and I wanted to see what the old fluid looked like. It was as clean as the new fluid.

For the Turbo/GT3 the scheduled change interval is every 90K miles. This is for a car used for normal driving. Tracking/etc one has to use his own judgement.

Anyhow, I suspect this 90K miles schedule fluid change applies to the 996 NA cars too. Should be covered in the owners manual.

However, to have the latest numbers you should check with the dealer for sometimes Porsche changes the service interval so the dealer will have the latest number.

I've talked to techs about tranny/diff fluid changes and they say if one wants to be proactive to change the fluid oftener, instead of every 90K miles changing the fluid at 60K, 50K or even 45K miles.

For Tip equipped cars the same applies.

While ZF might recommend 100K mile fluid services if one reads the fine print ZF (like other equipment makers) always defers to the automaker into which the equipment is installed. Thus if ZF says 100K miles and Porsche says 90K miles, the 90K miles is what should be used.

In my manual for a 2001, the schedule is 90k miles. It looks like it's been extended to 120k miles.

Oil/fluid is cheap compared to new parts!

Unless you go crazy with it

Not looking to skimp here, just know the reality vs what will invariably be suggested.

I changed my transmission fluid at the dealer at 40k miles and I could easily see the difference with the new fluid, at any gear changes and also lifting the gas on the highway.

This is a must do for cars over 50k miles or over 5 years old I think.

I agree. Just did mine as part of 60k service and you can notice transmission is smoother and quieter.
