Default Key Remote Inoperable

The key remote stopped working over the weekend on my '99 C2. Upon disassembly, a small metal flake was found inside the remote head. I found that this metal flake is the part of the electrical switch that moves to complete the circuit when you press the remote button. It must have just broken off after many years.

Has anybody come across this before? I doubt this can be repaired without replacing the key and getting it reprogrammed. Any other options?

Thanks!!

Anyone know what parts I need to get this fixed? Do I need a new key and programming?

New Transmitter (key head) and programming. You might be able to fix it if you are a good solderer. There was an article in Excellence couple years ago that had switch info and pics etc.
New head from Sunset Porsche has been ~$130. Programming is usually ~$100 or whatever your dealer charges for an hour labor.

If you go EBay or other non dealer options, make sure it comes with the 17? digit key identity code or it will be worthless.

If that is your only key (and repair is not an option) get two key heads and another blade cut - it will keep you going if one fails and you can get both programmed for the same cost. GL

Look for this artical from Excellence. You might be able to repair your switch.

Excellence issue 183, June 2010, pages 125-126. "Fob 4 Less- Fixing a modern Porsche key for less than $3".
