Default A new coolant tank cap design?

Stopped by a local indy who said there as a new update to the coolant tank cap (996 106 447 04) and recommended it.

I haven't heard of anything new for at least a year or two. Anyone else hear this or is it a bit of fantasy?

He probably was talking about the last updated tank.

New cap with part # ending in "02" or "04" has been around a while. ("03" never made it out I believe.)

If you have older cap just replace it with a new one. Why wait for the old one to leak?

If you have an "02" and it is not leaking you can probably keep it in service. I've not heard that it is required an "02" be replaced right away.

But a coolant cap is relatively inexpensive so an "upgrade" to an "04" might be ok. The cap makes a perfect Xmas stocking stuffer gift, too. Hint. Hint. Yes, two hints as I have two Porsches and both will have stockings hung over the fireplace come Xmas.

I think 04 was the last cap update. Check the last two numbers on your cap. 00, was first then 02, then 04? Skipped 03??

I thought he must be talking about the "previous redesign" that's been out for a while, but he made it sound like it just came out. Only wanted $14 for it, so wouldn't fund a trip to the Bahamas....

Does Santa read RL??? If so, I'm starting a new thread...

I recently purchased a new cap for my car and its number ends in "04". AFAIK, this is the newest cap available.

Got one from Suncoast last week or so, $15, 04 also. Mine is currently an 02 with an updated tank in '07, and it had a little build up of white around the base, so since I was putting in an order, I figured why not?

Where can you find the part number on the cap? Mine only shows PA6T/XT-GF35 but after googeling around I think that's just the type of plastic material it's made from.

For Sale: Apparently the world's only "03" coolant cap.
Price: 1MM USD

Think of how you will be able to brag to your friends and colleagues that you have the missing link of coolant caps

I took a pic of it the last time I was out working on the car, and have been meaning to look it up. This thread seemed like a good time to re-visit, and who knew, I've got the only one!

I'll trade you an "02" cap, an old RMS, and some metal shavings from an oil filter for your "03" cap. Interested?

But does it leak? Save it to put next to the next IMSB post about a 'perfect' bearing replacement.

Sorry, Invius, you are going to have to split that million with me because I just looked and mine is also a .03. Maybe they were just a short run. I replaced my cap about two years ago.

Since there is another update, guess I will have to check it out and get one.

@VGM, were you on the recent episode of "Hoarders?" Who keeps that kind of stuff?

Hmm, no leak yet (crosses fingers). When I bought my C2, it had already had the expansion tank replaced, so apparently at that point, Porsche hand-crafted 1 of 2 coolant caps, and called them the 03. They sent the other one to another Floridian, named Thundertub...and that is how the legend of the 03 cap was born. It is still for sale, the price is now 500k, as it is 1 of 2.
