Angry New Water Pump Hose Doesn't Fit

I installed a new water pump this weekend, and I decided to replace a few hoses while I was at it. I ordered the water pump hose from Porsche (p/n 996-106-850-05), but it doesn't fit. It is slightly different than the existing hose, and given the tight spaces involved, the differences create angles that kink the hose.

I'm contacting Porsche about this, but does anyone have any thoughts? If this new hose is the current "standard substitiution", what have you done?

Thanks for any help.

See pic below.

I encountered the same issue...you will need the new hardline as well in order for all the hoses to line up.

Does that mean that the "new" hoses combo fits fine in the MKII engines without the new hard line?

You have to ask the dealer what other parts are needed to make the redesigned hose fit. I asked them when another hose was replaced but lucked out as it was a direct fit.

Just a general comment that it is a very good idea to get part info from a dealer parts department. The part is looked up based on the car' VIN.

I can give two examples of why this rather important. In the case of my Boxster when the OE battery failed I got the battery part number from the parts department. The part number had changed. The new battery had more capacity and was physically larger. It fit though without any difficulty in the battery tray.

In another case I ordered new windshield washer nozzles. I learned the parts numbers had changed and for these new ones in order to work required two small additions to the wiring harness were needed. The original nozzles were not longer available either.

I used this on my 2001, I think 1999 uses 996 106 250 55 per parts catalog

Solved:

So, it turns out that in 1998, Porsche used one combination of water pump hose and lower rigid pipe on the 996 (shown as the top pair in the photo below. The rigid pipe has a goose-neck end). Sometime later (mid 1999?) they changed over to different design, where part of the curve is in the hose rather than in the pipe. (shown as in the bottom pair below.) However, the Porsche catalog indicates that ALL of the 99's have the later design, when they do not. The solution is to replace the rigid pipe along with the hose, which is annoying, but at least my car is back together.

Not sure which you have? Climb under the car and follow the hose up from the water pump. Just above the water pump, the hose has a tee that connects to the rigid pipe. If the rigid pipe has a nearly 180° gooseneck, you have the old style. If it is basically a 90° bend, you have the new style. I hope this helps someone in the future.

Old water pump hose: 996.106.250.52-2
Water pump hose: 996.106.850.05

Old hard pipe: 996.106.243.51 AS01
New hard pipe: 996.106.243.54

I had the same issue, but I just cut the first hose down a little bit and got it to fit with a little work. It seems to be working fine with no kinks (knocks on desk).

Thanks for the explanation! I ended up putting the old hose back on (my dad's 1999). Now I know what to buy.
