Default Bentley Error?

Got my book today and have ben cruising through it.......couple of observations so far........1) page 15-74 about replacing the IMS bearing. It doesn't tell you how to remove the old bearing. It only says "use tools from a reputable manufacturer to repplace IMS bearing."........2) section 17-2 (lubrication system) when talking about the oil level display in the 2001-2005 cars, says "requirements for accurate measurement are: engine idling at operating temperature......." Pretty sure the engine must not be running and be at rest for around 5 mins or so, or maybe I've been wrong about it all along??

That's as far as I've got.

Best Regards

Les.

Then I think that's a serious omission on their part, in that they don't specify any particular vehicle or engine type, just the 2001 - 2005 cars in general. Their instruction on this could lead someone to overfill the engine, by a considerable amount I would think.

I guess it pays to cross-check with the owner's manual for these things for your specific car.......and just in case I thought I might be going nuts, I just checked the info in my car and it does say to NOT start the engine when checking oil level.

Many manuals, even factory ones are full of errors. The techs job is to hopefully to have a good enough understanding of what he's doing to recognize the errors and work around them.

So do Bentley publish errata to correct any mistakes? Or just correct those in the next edition?

However, there in not yet any updates for this new 996 book. I've posted my observations on their website for their consideration.

Best Regards

1. The instructions vary by mfg, for example casper has different tools/different procedure than lne for bearing replacement.

2. 996 NA uses a WET sump (porsche calls it "integrated" dry sump), engine must be OFF, and sitting for 20 minutes (preferably after warmed) for accurate reading. The longer it sits the more accurate it gets, but i think good to account for oil expansion and get it hot, then let it sit for 30 min.
