Question Replacement Tires?

I just bought a 2002 996 (77,000 miles, 18" Carrera rims, new water pump and (preventative) IMS upgrade as part of the purchase price) to replace my 1980 911SC which died (#2 cylinder) after 375,580 miles.

I will need to replace the rear tires. The present tires are Continental SportContact2 285/40 ZR18's. When I go to the Discount Tire website and plug in 2002 911, they show the replacement tire as a 265/35ZR18 (which I believe was the pre-2002 996 factory tire size).

What are the pros/cons about using the 265/35ZR18 vs the 285/30ZR18's?
I am not autocrossing this car and will use it (like the 911SC before it) as a daily driver. Is there a difference in terms of ride characteristics. I also noticed that there are a lot more choices in the 265/35ZR18 size than the 285/30ZR18's.

I can't answer the pros and cons, but I had to call them for the 285/30 size. They then took a small deposit and they arrived in two days. This was about 1.5 years ago. Hopefully they can still get them.

Stock on my 2001 C4 was 265/35ZR18. I believe the stock 18s on the 2002 C2 were 285/30ZR18. Check the Tire Rack web site.

I went through this recently when replacing my tires. The correct sizing for the 18" Carrera 5-spoke lightweights is 225/40 front and 285/30 rear.

If you try different tire sites you will get different sizing results for some reason (Tire Rack for instance).

You might consider getting all 4 tires if you can't find matching rears or if the tires are more than a couple of years old.

Hope you enjoy your new Pcar as much as you did your '80!

For 3 seasons I used wider tires on the back than what was suggested. I had nothing but funky wear issues, cupping mostly, tires only lasted me a season and not because they were wore out but because they were so cupped and really loud with road noise. Last season I put cheap kumho's on from tire rack. Paid less for all 4 then I paid for what I was buying locally, its the end of the second season for them and they still look, feel, drive, sound like new.
