My reversing lights are not working and I believe it could be a faulty reversing switch somewhere on the transmission. Has any of you had to change one? If so could you please tell me where to find the switch on the transmission and how easy/hard it was to change? Thanks.

It's probably the easiest thing you can replace on a 996. You can reach it without jacking up the car. You just need to lay on the ground, reach up to remove it, and then replace the new one. I think it took 5 minutes. 10 tops.

Thanks UBERMENSCH:- Is it on top of the transmission or on the side or where? If that doesnt do the trick do you know if that switch then goes via a relay on the car.If so, where do i find the relay... Thats looking in advance if the switch doesnt do the trick.

There is the reverse sensor on the left side of the transmission on to, about half way between the front and back made of white plastic.

OK Jacked up the car from the rear, dropped it onto stands and found the switch real easily. Unplugged it. Uncrewed the switch 19m wrench. then reconnected the wires and pushed the switch manually with ignition on and reverse selected and dammit the lights worked this time. Put it back in. selected reverse, ignition switched on, and dammit they didn't work this time. Took the switch to auto zone and got a new one $28. One thing I did notice is the newer switch was harder to push down manually. I put that in and GOD it worked. So thanks to you guys another simple DIY job completed and the car passed it's annual and emission test with flying colours.

Mine don't work either. They used to, but apparently according to the incredibly cranky old lady who claims I nearly ran her over whilst reversing, they now don't. (Not like she couldn't have seen the damn car moving in a reverse direction...)
