I'd love too but they have just closed now. Additionally he said that there was water leaking on the spark plugs so the separator is faulty regardless. It was only changed 9,000 km ago and 8 months today. The warranty for parts and labour is 6 months so I've missed out by two months as the previous keeper had the separator changed :0(

Why would a new head gasket been put on?

Any chance of overheating the block and PO warped the heads slightly?
Or was this a knee jerk reaction to an intermix fix?

I have not heard of these engines having head gasket failures.

I have one in the shop right now that I just put head gaskets on. It happens.
Although I didn't see where the OP said he needs or had a head gasket done.

These multi layer steel gaskets are very robust. How did the one you work on failed?

I'm not very savvy under the bonnet so excuse my ignorance but the previous owner had the engine out to have something done to it and thought it logical to have a fair few things done to her while it was out.

I'll presume that is in UAE dirhams, which means approx $1056. USD which is a decent fee for replacing AOS and flushing cooling and engine, including replacing coolant and oil & filter. Market prices vary depending on location and I am guessing that UAE would be at the higher end of repair costs.

Yeah price wise its decent. I fly out of Dubai for 10 days on the 29th and the car will be ready on the 30th, sods law! So I'm gonna let them sit and monitor the car so that any issues can be addressed in my absence.

Would you kindly ask your indy how he knows it is the AOS? I have suspected that a failing AOS could cause intermix, but how does one distinguish between a bad (intermixing AOS) and a cracked head? TIA

My point exactly -- if you blew a head gasket on an M96 engine -- something caused it.

Not like 944 Turbo where the gaskets themselves are a failure mode.

So if the PO truly knows that the headgasket was replaced -- then it's likely
to be a symptom and not the cause.

I'm with you there. A cracked head possibly... hopefully not!

Experience, along with some proper testing,ie: coolant pressure test, compression, leak down, will tell you quite a bit.

A previous head gasket failure/replacement could have also been a misdiagnosis on a faulty AOS. AOS is the easiest/least expensive to replace, if that's where it is leading I would start by replacing that also. Then observe and retest to see if anything else. Some would depend on miles and condition of car along with history or repairs and usage.
