Default Air con and rad fans not working

My car is a 98 c2, the aircon and rad fans have stopped working...

When I press the snowflake to turn the aircon on there is no change in engine rpm, no fans come on and the inside of the compressor pulley does not spin.

I cant get any fans to work by bypassing the relays. so low speed and high speed fans have stopped working.

Any ideas whats wrong?

Fan relay failure is fairly common.

Not sure about the a/c - perhaps your compressor has failed.

Ive tried swapping all 4 relays about and it makes no difference so I cant see how all 4 relays could fail at same time. I know the fan resistors should be ok because they are only 6 months old.

Its just strange how my aircon and rad fans have both failed at the same time? Can this be connected? I've checked all the fuses they are fine.

Are you having trouble getting your key out of the ignition? If so, the ignition switch going bad can cause the a/c & interior fans not to work. Ask me how I know.......

Ignition switch? When it goes bad it does funny things to the AC. When you start your car, try turning the key ever so slightly counter clockwise. See if that does anything.

I've got it working. I had the aircon unit displaying coolant temperature. I put it back into auto mode and tried the snowflake button and aircon works. Very strange because the snowflake button usually works when your displaying coolant temperature?
My fans are now working also. I can't understand this...

I would still look at your ignition switch. They don't go bad all at once. Good luck!

The behavior can be explained by considering that feature to view the coolant temp (among other things) putting the A/C control unit in some diagnostics mode doesn't work 100%.

This is probably why AFIAK this "feature" was never documented in the owners manual. It doesn't work reliably.

Sincerely,

Macster.

Macster I think your right, well at least I know how to fix this if my fans go off again. I always run in diagnostic mode to keep an eye on the digital coolant readout.

Thanks for that roadsession. I think I have a leaking condenser so thats probably why my compressor inst spinning.
