Default Rattling windscreen

My windscreen has developed the common rattle. I know there is a technical bulletin for this - has anyone here done the fix? DIY or trip to the OPC?

Does the added window rope get put in from the outside?

Can this be fixed by placing foam at inside bottom edge to stop the window creaking against the dash top?

Managed to fix my slightly loose gear lever cover by pulling off and sticking some foam to the front leading edge. Used to make an annoying noise whenever changing gear.

Many thanks!

Gareth.

You will likely need a new seal and the foam cord.
The cord goes under the windshield (per this diagram from the TSB).

I did it recently. You need the foam rubber cord, I think I paid about 15USD for it, before shipping from Suncoast. You also need a spatula, and about 20-30 minutes. I put it everywhere I could. I would say that it reduced the rattles in my car by about 90%, and increased the enjoyability of it significantly. I also read where some people put the foam cord, or anything else they could wedge without it being noticed on the inside of the car in the rear by the back window up at the top. I seem to have a slight rattle from there, and plan on putting some cord in there, and seeing if that helps. Something else you may want to try when you are doing the work.

Good luck,

DS

Do you need 1 kit or 2? It looks like 2 layers are needed, but is there enough material in 1 kit to double up the lining on the front windshield? Thanks.

What does this rattle sound like? Kind of like a buzzing sound? I think I have it too. sounds like the window is creaking or buzzing at low speeds due the the flexing of dash. I hate it.

Sounds to me like leather rubbing against leather or some other material. I tried narrowing it down to the dash, but the more I read it sounds like the rope windshield issue. I ordered 2 kits today, will install wednesday. Hope to heck this does the trick because its driving me nuts and around western pa its pothole city!

Only 1 kit is needed. I don't recall exactly how many meters the cord was for one kit, but it was plenty for one 996. I didn't double mine up, as it was very snug with one layer, but the TSB says to double it. Feed the cord in, and use the spatula to push the cord all the way down. The TSB goes into quite a bit of detail of what to do, etc.

Mine sounded like a creaking and a rattle -- it was worse at certain speeds (specifically higher RPM's, seemed to rattle everything a little more).

So are you saying that you press the cord in between the gap of the dash and the window with a platic spatula? Please elaborate if you will?

I edited previous post regarding doubling up, and attached TSB regarding rattle.
