Houston to Denver in our new c4s
I just booked our plane tickets for Houston! Our boxster was sold in march and I have been looking for the right 996 c4s since then to be my dd in Denver co. Two cars failed PPI and I did not cast a big net since we are very color and option specific. Finally found a speed yellow with sport seats. Long story short my 4 year old son ( huge gear head who has been asking me for a replacement car since oyster drove off) and I will have our first ever fly and drive together. I personally made about six of those in the past but this will be my first with my son. We will fly into houston on 7/26 at 10:40 to pick up the car. We will plan on leaving houston about noon.
Question: is the tx panhandle more fun than going north to okc and Wichita route? I would think so but it is more desolate and I don't want to risk a new to me car in the middle of nowhere unless it s at least worth it.
Are there any rennlisters along the path less traveled (or okc and wichita route) in case we have problems that we can call upon?

Having been on both routes (although starting out on I-35 rather than 45) on a trip to Denver, I can say with confidence that the panhandle is the way to go. Not only are you more likely to be able to 'test' the car, but it smells much nicer along the way, with the exception of Amarillo restaurants. I also thought that despite periods of the same scenery along Texas, there are plenty of interesting things to see (and keep your son occupied. Wind farms, anyone?)

I can't explain how excited I am to share this with him. He always reminds me when the local pca breakfast clubs getting together. So it is big deal for us both. I basically passed on some local cars (albeit wrong colors) to push for the right car and the fly/drive experience with him.
It is decided then, we will go up the panhandle. We will try to make Wichita falls on Thursday. Any recommendations for a town for second night? I don't think we will make it to denver and will need to stop overnight on Friday.

Sounds like an awesome trip!
As a Dallas native, I've typically taken the route up Hwy 287 through Wichita Falls, up Hwy 64 through Raton, NM and then on to I-25 north into Denver. This is still my favorite route.
Enjoy the drive and your new C4S! Hope to see you at a Porsche Breakfast Club meeting or a PCA meeting in the Denver area in the near future. We're doing the Peak-to-Peak drive from Denver up to Estes Park for brunch at the Stanley Park Hotel tomorrow AM. I'm looking forward to it.

+1 on taking 287 to Wichita Falls...coming from Houston, you will get onto 287 south of Dallas, and bypass most of the Dallas metroplex traffic which is a big plus.
You'll experience lots of topography changes between Houston and Wichata Falls. IMHO, the rolling piney woods from north of Conroe to south of Dallas are the best. Make sure to point out the giant statue of Sam Houston that's along the right side of I-45 near Huntsville (at Sam Houston State University); it might be interesting to a 4-year old...
Enjoy the heck out of the trip!
