Default Uneven exhaust tips = bad motor mount?

Noticed my driver-side exhaust tip sitting about 1/2 inch lower than the other side today (see photo). Looking through the threads this is either exhaust alignment or a bad motor mount.

The exhaust has never been touched and is pretty much 'welded' in place.

I did lift the back of the car for an oil change recently using the lift point on the engine and some have argued that is hard on the motor mounts.

Is there anything else to look for before pulling the trigger on new mounts? Are the Wevo SS much harsher (e.g. I'm quite happy with my Euro M030 suspension, but the Porsche racing suspension was too harsh... name escapes me)

Thanks,

Joe

Between the tip, cats, and muffler connections, there is plenty of opportunity to adjust the position of the tips. At least try to loosen those points and play around with that before you go to extremes. I still don't feel like I have mine perfect after installing the Fisters.

I read somewhere else (also on rennlist) that another sign of worn out motor mounts is a vibration in the seats during idle. My exhaust tips are even but I definitely get quite a bit of vibration at idle in my seats. So not sure if you have that, but it appears to be another symptom.

Measure the bottom of the oil pan on both sides before suspecting the motor mounts. In the picture it looks level.

If you have a better way than the link below, aside from using a 2/4 post lift, I'm all ears...

No need to jack up the car just grab a wrench or a ratchet and socket and loosen the clamp a bit, align the tip and tighten. I did mine several times on my C2. You spent more time typing on this thread than it takes to align them, lol.

my tips are also uneven, but managed to get almost straight by adjusting the brackets. passenger seat vibrates at idle - is this confirmed that it's worn engine mounts??

Thanks for the suggestion Healey, measuring the oil pan showed no difference between sides. Come to think of it, I haven't noticed any increase in vibrations while driving either.

Will try playing around with the exhaust tips/brackets next.

hi lerxst,
here is my method (for what its worth)
- i use two blocks of wood, 18" long, 7" wide, and 3" tall - as well as five hockey pucks. i use one puck on the lift saddle, and the other four for the tops of the jack stands.
- block tires/ebrake on
- lift one side from rear factory jack point till both wheels on that side are up (if lifting the entire car place one jack under front factory jack point
- place one of the blocks of wood under rear tire and lower vehicle onto front jack and rear wood block (i use the wood blocks alone for oil changes and also some exhaust work)
- repeat for other side. front is now on jackstands, and rear is on the blocks.
- now take jack and place way under the rear to the large suspension crossmember and jack up entire rear
- place jackstands under both rear factory jackpoints and remove wood blocks
- double check jackstands are holding well before getting under your car
- lowering is just reverse

i have had good luck with this. i have attached a photo as i had just set the rear jackstands. you can see where the jack is, as well as the wood blocks.

Hi everyone
I also have uneven tips, however, mine happened after i installed gemballa cans and no matter what i tried i cant get them to be even. I gave up thinking that since gemballa mufflers are hand assembled somebody messed up on the bracket on one side.

If anyone is looking for a used set of motor mounts (came off my car last week, 38K on the clock) let me know, would be happy to get rid of them.
