Rear view mirror fell off
My rear view mirror fell off the windshield today.....
There is an adhesive disk on the windshield that appears to have dried out and lost the adhesion over the last 12 years.
Has this happened to others? I could not find any mention of this in the 996 forum.
Can anyone confirm if the adhesive disk is available from Porsche? I searched through the catalog http://www.porsche.com/all/media/pdf...SA_KATALOG.pdf without success, I do have some 3M double sided trim molding type adheisve that is similar and could use that.
As well, does the round painted metal disk which is to be glued to the windshield removable from the mirror arm? I would like to minimize the weigth of the entire mirror assembly while the adhesive sets to maximum strength, but cannot tell if the disk can rotate to unlock itself from the mirror assembly itself.
Thanks in advance.

Thats for defo the first sign that the IMS is on it's way out. Next thing is the engine goes up in a cloud of smoke. haha. Take the car into Cindy Rowes window people (if they are in your neck of the woods) and they will stick it back in place for free. They did on our dodge van when the rear view inside mirror fell off. I think its due to the sun.

I guess I answered my own question, http://www.renntech.org/forums/topic...irror-removal/
The mounting disk is a pain to remove though, I have a machinest vise and it took a couple of tries to clamp the disk sufficiently well in order to twist the the rest of the mirror assembly off......
I'll post pix of the mount shortly.

Mine fell off in the heat, last year. It is a total waste to buy the adhesive disk from Porsche and do it yourself. I tried it and was extremely careful and precise. $25 down the drain. A month later, it fell off again. I went to a windshield shop and they used their adhesive to mount the disk, and it was on for good. $10. Only problem was, they cleaned the bottom of the disk off, and so it was actually closer to the windshield than stock. I went to install an auto dimming mirror, and in the process of of rotating the mirror stalk off the base, the windshield cracked! So I ended up with a new windshield and OE disc mount anyway.

I tried the 3M VHB (very high bond) adhesive film, i.e. not double sided carpet tape etc., the car set in the garage for several days before I drove it yesterday, the mirror fell off within 3 hours in the outdoor heat.
I went to the local auto parts store, could not find the Permatex kit so got the VersaChem repair kit, $5 plus tax, put the disk on last night, waited an hour before re-installing the mirror assembly, will see how long this lasts, seems very solid without the mushy give the adhesive film had.

You need Loctite 319
Has a 1 min bond time.

You must be able to get it in Canada as well.

Probably, but I didn't bother looking since I've already performed the repair with the VersaChem adhesive I found at the local automtive shop (Canadian Tires), which is made for this application.
It should hold as the adhesive seems to have really cured well and the car has been outside in the high heat we've had late last week, the mirror is still firmly attached to the glass.
