Default 996 starting problem

I have a 2004 996 tiptronic cab. I keep getting "selector lever not engaged" message come up. I have replaced the selector switch but this did not fix the problem. The dealer had trouble diagnosing the problem and said I need a new gear selector lever that something electronic inside was at fault. I didn't think there was anything electronic about the lever and want to ask if anyone has any ideas before I buy a replacement one. My car has 51000 miles. Thanks

Just a guess, but it could be just sloppy linkage. Take off the shifter cover boot and inspect and tighten things up and look for wear. Check for the brake interlock switch also, on the brake petal.
