I'm wondering if the clutch isn't on the way out...or perhaps already out.
When my pressure plate broke recently, the clutch still operated, but it became very difficult to engage gears - any gear mind you - but the lever needed quite a shove.
It shouldn't be difficult to engage first when cold. More difficult than when warm maybe, but not difficult to thepoint of not being able to do so without double clutching it.
As far as hurdigurdiman goes - just try to ignore him.
