It shouldn't be difficult to engage first when cold. More difficult than when warm maybe, but not difficult to thepoint of not being able to do so without double clutching it.

I had MTF changed yesterday by my local indy. 1st gear issue is much better and overall shifting is much smoother.

Shifter linkage cable adjustment may additionally improve the engagement ease.

The indy also mentioned adjusting the linkage cable as the next step but wanted me to drive it for a few days first to see if changing the MTF helped.
