Default 996 crack in rear suspension

I was looking over a low mileage (<40k) 1999 C2 to purchase today and noticed a crack in the rear undercarriage.

We think it's a lower control arm but wanted to check with the experts on this forum.

Also it looks like the plate under motor is a different material (lighter shade of metal), is that normal?

Thanks for any input, hopefully these arent major issues and i can join the 996 club soon!

I would get a shop to look that over along with a proper PPI.

I am thinking, what the hell caused that crack? Get this checked out. It doesnt look good. What ever it is (control arm) it needs replacing if it is cracked. Don't worry too much about the differant metal on the protection plate. I think it's alloy for lighter weight. Get the whole car checked over by someone who knows his onions and that includes everything you read that can go wrong with the 996. You will find the posts on this forum. You only made 2 posts since joining in 2010? I hope you have read all about the 996.

That plate looks like the aluminum skid plate that was installed following a suspension upgrade. I did the same for my car when I put on the RoW M030 setup. I'd be more concerned about the cracked parts - get a thorough PPI so you know what you're getting into...good luck w/ your search.

Thanks guys, I had seller take another look and he didnt see the crack so maybe its just a shadow/bad photo.

Either way, I'm going to have it looked over with a PPI.

I haven't posted much since the search function has given me 99% of the info I need.

Thanks again

it would have to be a great deal.... If not just walk away, there are great examples out there.
