My first engine tear-down.

Got an M96 2.7L cheap from a buddy and am tearing it apart as practice for a rebuild on my 140k plus 2.5 on the '99 Boxster.

Got the heads off and am ready to take the two case halves apart. Ran into this serrated bolt.

What is it and what do I need to loosen it?

One of many Porsche special tools needed, available thru Hazet, Baum, maybe even Snap On has an equal, if memory serves correctly. It's one of many special tools that you should have in your tool box if you are going to seriously be rebuilding these motors. I can look up the actual tool number and supply it if you can't locate it.

Thanks Viking. Got most of the special stuff, but this one was a surprise.

Any specifics are welcome.

XZN sockets or 12 point sockets.

A regular 12 point socket will be fine. Also, you do not need to take that bolt off to separate the case halves, even then only if you're doing crank work or replacing the main bearings.
