from a seller's perspective she made the right call.

Sorry things didn't work- good luck with the search as otto says - there are other fish out there.

exactly... the woman selling would be foolish to pass up a sale for a potential one when no deposit has been offered! Lesson learned, hopefully!

I have done smaller deposits with people once I have seen the car and registration - it is pretty common for used car purchase even from private party - and really - is someone going to go through all that trouble to rip you off for 500 bucks? I always write the receipt as refundable deposit with the terms we agreed to and have us both sign.

You are probably in the same place you would have been after the PPI, but you didn't waste any time and money on the PPI.

Be glad and move on.

Even with a check she could sell to the next person and rip your check up or hand it back to you. Even with a cash deposit the same thing applies. She could hand you the cash back. In other words. She can sell to whoever she likes. She could gazump you for a higher price from the next person. She can refuse to sell it to anyone afterall. It is her car. If she has signed something to the effect she will sell to you then you can take her to court. Other than that, Bollux to her and move on.

Call me crazy but when I was pursueing the C4S purchase - long distance - sight unseen - never met the seller. I did put up a 10% deposit via certified bank check. I get it that I was taking a risk but sometimes trust has to be a part of the deal.

Now understand that I was on the hunt for a C4S for quite some time and this one appeared to be the closest to a perfect example as I had come across - so I was quite motivated to not lose the opportunity to own it.

After the PPI I had the car shipped and fortunately everything worked out very well.

Everything happens for a reason. Sounds like this is the case here.
