Default loss of power during acceleration!

Hi everyone. Looking for some expertise or someone thats had a similar problem with your Pcar. I was accelerating onto a freeway onramp the other night as I noticed in 2nd gear aroung 5500-6000rpm's I had a sudden power lose. Felt as if I was decelerating even if I had my foot on the gas. Check engine light came on and freaked me out. I drove home the rest of the way real gently. What can this be? Any suggestions?

Welcome to Rennlist! I suggest reading the CEL code first then report back here.

Default CEL code?

not to sound ignorant but what is the CEL code? Just a brief background on the car. I changed the air intake to a K&N a couple of weeks ago and the car ran GREAT(especially during heavy acceleration)! This past weekend, did an oil change(Castrol syntec 5w40). To me, it seemed to run a little differently after the oil change(as far as the engine feeling as smooth as before).

Is the check engine light still on?

What's the chances you hit the rev limiter? I've done that a few times when it caught me off gaurd.

Notably, I let a buddy drive my car once. I encouraged him to stick his foot into it, he did, the engine ran right up to 7000 rpm and shut him down. He freaked out, I didn't.

It's the check engine light that is casue for concern. As the man said, scan the code and post it up.

CEL=Check Engine Light

Use a Durametric to read the code or have your Dealer or Indy do it. BTW if your CEL light starts flashing do not drive the car. Good luck!

Or at least use a generic OBDII scanner to read the code(s). If you have an Android phone, I highly recommend the Torque app ($5) + organge/blue OBDII bluetooth scanners ($20). Can't beat the price and convenience! Oh btw, you should at least check the MAF connection on the new air intake.

Get it checked out. It sounds like it could be ignition coil related to me, but the code reader will give you more information.

I don't think it was the rev limiter because I've done that in the past. The power delivery felt like I was accelerating in too high a gear(wrong gear). Yes, CEL is still on and the first thing I checked was the MAF connections when I got home and the rest of the intake to make sure nothing came loose. Thanks for all your support

Some might suggest a relationship with an over-oiled K&N filter you recently installed. Your CEL code should pinpoint your problem.

To get rid of the CEL, disconnect the battery leads for a few minutes. Then reconnect them. The computer will reset things and the CEL should stay off. It just may have come on momentarily as you over taxed the revs. If it comes back on again in a few days, then look into it. If it starts to flash. As Gonzo suggests, Don't drive. Those CELs are a PITA.

"...Some might..."

No, 90% of purchasers and probably half of non-purchasers.

Oiled K&N, bad news for MAF/IAT sensors.

so the CEL is due to a "camshaft position sensor 2" which put the car into "limp mode". Does anyone know if this is costly to repair or even better is it a DIY fix?

I did a quick search on camshaft position sensor/cam position sensor and found a number of good threads... they might apply to your situation.

If you have over filled your engine during your oil change, this might cause the cam shaft to whip up the oil into a froth maybe causing the loss of power and subsequent CEL on. Check your oil on the dip stick.
