springs for lowering

I've heard (and searched for) that aftermarket springs (HK, Eibach, etc) without coilovers will damage/kill the shocks. Does the damage/killing of the shocks mean that they will actually BREAK apart, start leaking, anything of the sort?
or does it mean that they will just lose their ability to absorb well and just give a super stiff ride?
i want to lower the 03 996 by at least 1.5" but i dont have $$ for coilovers and if i did i wouldnt spend it on it i'd still rather get the shocks. Personally i like the stiff/feel the road suspension - but i dont want to cut corner here then pay triple the amount for new shocks cause they fell apart and actually broke.
so if its only the absorption capacity that'll be killed i'm OK with it.

Are you running stock OEM shocks and springs now? ROW MO3O suspension springs and shocks lower the Porsche, but not a lot. Sounds like you want to change current springs only and keep shocks? If so, you won't break the shocks but they may wear faster.

We carry H&R Sport Springs that will lower your car 1.5 inches, just as you were looking for. They won't kill your shocks, but like Barn996 said, they will wear a bit quicker.

wearing ie. ride comfortability? or wearing as in its gonna wear and break?
and yes everything is stock, and i want to keep stock shocks just get the springs for lowering.
also that website you gave me, it's $299.99 priced "per set"... does that mean set of 4 springs? or the front set and rear set meaning i have to get 2 sets?
thanks!!!

The dampers were designed around a specific spring rate, that of the stock spring. When you put a sport spring on it, the shock will have a softer "bump", or compression. So ride may be alittle rough, depending on the road condition.
Priced per set is all 4 springs.

I had H&Rs (done by previous owner) on my dearly-departed 996 and they were a significant improvement in handling and looks over stock. And $299 is an amazing bargain (of course budget for a realignment at the least).

Lowering springs without shocks reminds me of the rice rockets that are slammed but bounce around like crazy when they hit any bump on the highway because their stock shocks were not meant for the lowered springs. I'd be very surprised if a 996 that was lowered without stiffer shocks also didn't bounce all over the place.
Since the stock shocks on a 996 don't last long anyway, I'd recommend you save up for a set of koni or bilstein sport shocks to go with the lowered springs.
