What MY is it ? I would get a good PPI that checks for any of they typical warning signs (search the threads lots of info). IMS guardian has a lot of suported here. For me, I would be more concerned about the basics you would want to check before a 14 hour drive (coolant, alignments, pumps, belts etc). Enjoy the ride !

Ok. Thanks for the helpful advice. I've been lurking for a while so I respect the opinions of the responders. I'll ask for a little extra inspection with regards to the oil during the PPI. If all is well, then I shall return to the board and try to ask less stupid questions with my new fantasy car in the garage.

Add to the statistics - purchased an 04 with 22k miles in 07. Put 50k miles on it so far including a 3k mile round trip shortly after I purchased it - still running with original IMS - stll own and still drive it
Purchased an 04 C4S with 23k miles in 10/2011. Intened to fly out and drive it home 3k miles, work life got in the way so had it shipped closed carrier. Drove it 1100 miles round trip in 11/2011, now have 32k miles on it - still running with original IMS - still own it and still drive it.
As others have suggested - do your due diligence including PPI - which anyone should do regardless of IMS fear.
PPI is no guarantee that a car won't have an issue, but there is never that guarantee. If it passes and the car seems like it is "your car" Drive it home and enjoy every moment of bliss.
I do not have Guardians - not IMS Guardians anyway

If you are that paranoid - and have budget for maintenance why not have local indie do clutch, IMSB, AOS, Water Pump etc. before you drive it so you have peace of mind .... probability of issue is very low (have them pulling Oil filter during PPI would give you even more confidence as stated above) - but yes it can happen and you seem to value your nuts ..... (if car was stored for long periods of time or oil changes were not frequent I might be a little bit more worried). The work might not be a bad investment for a good condition low mileage car at that age - but again - you can see from the reaction to your question - how divided the opinions are about this ......

I would not.....
IMSB issue for sure
The engine will explode in less then 5 hours drive....
A friend of mine told me that.....or maybe i read it somewhere....or maybe i just heard it.....or maybe my mechanic told me....
anyway i would not buy this car....a 14 hour drive...i would buy a Toyota....maybe not ...you know the brake or the gaz pedal.....

If this thread has ANY merit then the 996 is complete $hit and Porsche should be out of business.
Really??? You cannot purchase a 996 and drive it home without 1st making serious preventative maint. Give me a f'ing break!!!
Do those of you who believe there has not been fear mongering here still believe this after reading this thread??????
If so, your choice of car shows that you have a serious lack of judgment.
Nice job Jake... Congrats!!!!!!!!

You could probably do 13 hours no problem. 13.5 hours if you want to push it a little. But, definitely not 14 hours or more. Now, if you drove 7 hours the first day, and then another 7 hours on day #2, you'll be good-to-go becuase the IMS does not keep track.

FYI I just picked up my 996 a few weeks ago drove 13.4 hours then had the damn IMS bearing fail..... Sike.... I just stopped for this awesome pic But seriously.. Buy and enjoy if you think it's to risky even after a good ppi don't do it. Simple as that.. No one here can tell you what to do with the "risk" placed on your bank acct.
