2nd Gear Detent Fix

2nd Gear Detent Fix
My 99 has 76,000 miles and while second gear is not popping out, first gear started to. Did a little looking and found a few people with same issue and the Gbox detent worked to solve the issue for some. Well, I figured it a cheap way to start. If it works...great, if not...rebuild. It seemed easy enough, and even though the workspace is tight, I managed to get the detent cover off. Now the detent won't come out. I have contact with a magnet but not even budging. The guys at gbox said to heat it up. I've tried and maybe just not got it hot enough. Torched it for a while and the bottom of the transmission was very warm to the touch so it had to be very hot where I needed it to be. Not hot enough??? Anyone else have this problem and found a solution? I feel so defeated after struggling forever on getting the cover off!!!

I hope you tried everything it says on the page http://www.gboxweb.com/detent.html Good luck. Wish I could help more.

I did the 2nd gear detent with Ferd (redridge) and had a tough time. Reason is that there is vacuum with the tranny fluid with the detent that makes it difficult for you to just use any magnet. You can either drain the tranny fluid to a lower level so you can get at it easier or try your luck with a more powerful magnet. It took Ferd over an hour to get it out.

Thanks, I'll try with the tranny fluid drained. I was planning on changing, anyway. The guys at gbox said to use heat b/c it might have some residue (teflon, I think he said) and heat would burn or melt it off. Chsu74, did Ferd have the tranny out or in the car when removed and how did he finally get it out?

Finally got the detent out! Air gun proved worthless...that thing was stuck. Drained the fluid and used a neodymium magnet with massive pull force. Lift a little with the magnet, push back down, repeat...about a thousand times. Seriously, I worked until hand got too cramped and would come back later. After 4 days of work it came out. chsu74, thanks for letting me know how hard it was but that it could be done. I would have thrown in the towel, otherwise. Let's hope this solves my problem.

So it sounds like it the gbox fix really worked? Going to order one next week and see if it cures my 2nd gear pop-out when cold.

I did the 2nd gear detent fix on my wifes 996. 2nd gear was popping out like crazy when cold. I used my own detent (not the Gbox one) and it does help. If your synchros are bad obviously the detent won't fix your transmission issues but as far as the pop-out goes it definitely helped.
