Default Permanent stereo removal

did a search and didn't see a direct response...

I just bought a 99 996 that has an aftermarket head unit and amp; I'm assuming speakers as well (though they are in the stock enclosures).

I want to remove the stereo permanently (i.e. not replacing it with another stereo, etc). this is a project track car that will probably eventually become a project race car.

any advice? I've bought a DIN blank from Pelican Parts to fill the hole in the dash. do I need to pull the fuses, removing the wiring, etc or leave all that in?

if this has been covered elsewhere, a link is fine...

TIA!

Why not remove it all? Why have a blank in its place if its a race car? I would be taking as much non-functional weight out as possible!

well the blank weighs about 5 ounces

I guess the question is do I remove all the wiring or will that create more of a mess than it's worth?

It all adds up... wiring in particular is extremely heavy, its copper after all.

It depends on how committed you are to the project. If you're truly going to race car level, there will be no going back. In which case, you might as well remove everything.

However, if you think you may want to sell it at some point and that buyer might want to use it on the street, then I'd just install the blank plates and leave the wiring in place.

There are blank plates for the dash and rear side speakers as well; about $50 a pair if I remember correctly. Then there is the GT3 center console delete kit - about $150 for that.

The wiring is part of the wiring harness of the car. Removing the wiring specific to the stereo would be a major project. I agree, it's weight, but not the easiest weight to lose.

What you do want to do is take out the speakers and the amp. All of those items together could add up to 40-50lbs, depending on what aftermarket equipment was added.

OK, thanks, that's what I was looking for. I didn't know if stereo wiring would be part of the harness or separate.

thanks!
