Default IMS Retrofit, Clutch, and Short Shifter

Hi all, would love experiential input on an estimate I have. Using a independent (albeit a prominent one) here in North Texas. I am having the IMS retrofitted. While they are in, they are going to do the clutch AND I have been wanting a short shifter, so they will do that as well. The IS and clutch combo quoted at $2400 and we estimated around $500 for short shifter install (parts and labor for all). Does $2900 sound reasonable for this amount of work. Are there any other opportunities/risks should anticipate while they are doing this work?

I got a good feeling for this place (RAC Performance) and obviously I want to understand as much going in so to minimize surprises (or hater up-sell). Any insight is appreciated!

that is in the ballpark for what I've heard elsewhere ($2500-3k). I'm assuming you're doing RMS and AOS at the same time as the IMS? might as well...

btw RAC does a great job.

Hi Jamie,

Just did mine . Inspected AOS, replaced RMS, water pump, and serpentine belt too.

Only 45,000 and clutch felt fine, but replaced it as well and glad I did.

good luck.

When I used to live in that area, I always take my car to RAC and they always do a great job. For the SSK install, I got quote from RAC and Boardwalk Porsche dealer and RAC was cheaper for labor. I ended up doing the install myself with help from this Forum especially Tim (Gota911). Cheers,

I'd try to find a diy'er on here to help you with the short shifter (atleast). Could save you a couple bucks for another project/upgrade. Thats what we do here... learn new things about our car to save $$ and allocate that money to another mod/maintenance task.. its a sickness.

I dont think that sounds out of line. He has to make a few $$ too. Is that with a new flywheel?

Other things while you are there?

Rear main seal to the newer style
Pending the year. Updated clutch fork
Air/Oil seperator.. is right there and would be a 10 min job vs 4-6 hours
While the trans is out the 2nd gear kickout prevention mod
Tranny oil change

and if you are doing the clutch.... A flywheel would be the proper way to go

Jamie that price is in line. I use RAC Performance and would highly recommend them. They did the IMS/RMS Clutch on my car a few months ago.

Great input here. Thanks all. I will definitely use RAC for the IMS and clutch work. I have some notes captured on flywheel and will inquire as o RMS and AOS remediation. The SSK work sounds temping as DIY. I don't know the first thing about this stuff but am interested with the right coaching. Anyone in DFW interested in coaching? Beers and first test drive after change are in order :-)

Thanks again, all. This is exactly why I joined this forum. Great support!

Wouldn't a flywheel add ~$1000+ to the total cost? Seems unnecessary to me if the original one checks out.

Randy, your IMS may have been one of the four that they said they had on the shelf that had been retrofitted. I will have them set mine aside to see what condition it is. If you're in the area, let's meet for coffee (or a beer) sometime.

LOL NZ951! My wife's is the only one that looks better, but I agree. The back of this car is just plain sexy. That's why I chose this model.

I agree...while I want peace of mind, I do not want to be throwing out suggestions for these guys. The AOS and RMS makes total since. I will get clarification on to what extent the clutch work is being done. I called the clutch out initially because the clutch does not engage until the pedal is almost completely let out. Definitely too loose in my opinion. Not sure what that translates into necessarily from a clutch remediation perspective, just that the pedal was the driver for the work.

Team, I am definitely going to go the DIY on the SSK. Two questions:

1. B&M or EVO? Or other? Leaning toward B&M based on others posts across the forum.
2. Do I want/need to do the linkage? With linkage, is it still a DIY?

I have mixed emotions about it at this point. I put my old FW back in and I wish I had not. I feel I will bo doing a clutch again in the near future.

and whenever you do a clutch you should have the FW turned. but a duel mass can not be turned.

A proper job would be with a new FW
