Default Looking to buy - how to spot full leather in photos

Thanks for all the replies to my other thread regarding 99/00 differences.

I continue my search, and am seeing loads of cars in online photos. I've have noticed significant differences in interiors. Some are listed as "full leather" some aren't. What are the differences? And if a seller fails to mention full leather in the ad, what are some visual cues that can help me identify that option. Lastly, what did full leather add (besides the leather) to the interior, and any idea of original cost?

Thanks!

On the 996 and 997 look at the cover over the instrument cluster. If you see stitching on the edge facing the driver, then it is full leather. Like this 2003 Turbo I sold some months ago.

There are several variations when it comes to leather options. Suggest the Porsche 911 Red Book for option codes and descriptions, or Adrian Streather's 996 book for a bunch of additional 996 info. Both also go into detail on the differences by model year. There are leather options to cover the vents and speaker covers, steering wheel air bag, seat options, center console, etc. I would start with the Red Book and if you get a 996, the Porsche 996 book is a great resource.

You are going to find Porsche's come with a zillion option choices. Don't let it drive you crazy. Focus on the ones that are important to you and even more on the cars history and a PPI.

Thanks, 87, yes, those last two items are super-important. I'm not in a hurry, so I'll stay focused on my checklist and try not to let emotions get in the way.

Again, thank you.

so there is no "guesssing", ask seller to give you the option codes in the tag/sticker under the hood so you can then decipher it. you can also ask for the VIN and run it.

Thanks for that. The book seemed pricey on Amazon, but was $10 on Google eBook.

The quick way is look at the rear seat panels, you'll see the stitching where they join the 2 pieces of leather, another way is to look for the matching stitching along the ridge on the door panel from the interior handle back along that ridge. From some angles it's more difficult to see.

Safe to say if you see the stitches on the dash (first photo), it has AT LEAST full leather as a starting point. When I looked for my car, full leather was a must have!
