I did something really, really stupid... HELP!
Hey guys, I have an 01 C4 and I was taking out the battery to go and get a new one... but I closed the frunk!
I know that there is an electric access point on the fuse panel near the clutch pedal, but my questions are:
A) will the fact that there is no battery and the terminals are just hanging there make a difference?
B) do I need another battery to connect to the terminal or could I just connect a car charger?
C) also, what is the biggest battery I can install into the car once I do get the frunk open?

A ) don't know ,good question! try it and let us know.
B) I think you have to use a battery, use the new one you are buying.
C ) Group 48/49 unless you want optima GMT and you will modify battery tray to hold it.
extra work!
D) Search for posts on emergency release cable under passengers front bumper if A is the problem.
Good Luck!

B) I don't know why the battery charger wouldn't work. It depends on the amperage generated by the charger. Maybe one of those trickle chargers doesn't have enough juice to light up the latch, but it has enough juice to slowly, very slowly trickle power to a battery. I'll bet (just a thought) that one of those larger, industrial strength, chargers would work. Not that I have ever tried it, though.
C) I have no clue.
Good luck.

C4CNRA had it right. There is a mechanical release, but for obvious reasons is not easy to get to.
Boot - opens at the back of the car.
Bonnet - opens at the front of the car.

The pull-out + terminal in the fuse panel by the driver's left foot is designed specifically to be able to "jump start" the car electrics to open the frunk if the battery is drained too far to operate it. Connect the your new battery to it with a set of jumper cables like shown in your owner's manual, and you should be able to open the frunk to install it properly. The alarm will generally go off, so be ready to disable it with your keyfob/key in the ignition.
Your only problem is if the terminals are shorted out. Do you recall if they were hanging in space, or touching each other or the chassis? If they're shorted, this won't work, and you'll blow a fuse.
I would not connect a car charger with no battery; car chargers can put out dangerously high voltages when there is no battery attached to absorb the load. Any 12V source should work, though; your old battery, new battery or another car should be fine.

This may seem like an odd question, but do you have an orbital polisher? I've found that I can vibrate the frunk ("froot" on the other side of the pond) lock open with one. This, of course, raises the question about the safety of the lock. But I figure if I get that much vibration while driving, I'll be too busy crashing to notice that the frunk has popped.
