Default Replaced ignition switch - still feels like there's glue in the cylinder!?

I had my mechanic change the ignition switch, thinking that would solve my problem, but it kind of made it worse! The key goes in, and is very hard to turn. Feels like someone put silly putty in there!

What else would cause this?

On the positive side, I had the brake fluid and gear oil changed, and the car feels like it's new! Shifting is smoother, brakes feel better, and the car is less noisy!

I would try to lubricate the key and keyhole...mine was a little tight after installation, but became butter smooth after lubricating and exercising a few times

Agree with Pesuazo

Don't use WD40 though. I used a silicon lubricant

So spray some lube into the key hole, and turn the key a few times? Simple as that?

Andy, I have the same issue. I changed my ignition switch about 2 years ago and while it's been better since the change it is still stiff to turn and does not always snap back to the off position immediately upon removing the key.

The proper fix is to replace the whole mechanical lock mechanism but I believe that is a serious PITA so I haven't done it.

Let us know how you make out if you decide to lube it.

Anyone else use lube with success? What type and brand? And don't say KY...

I've had success with graphite lock lube in other locks, haven't tried it in the p-car.

Still rockin' the almost 13 year old ignition switch.

Graphite lube is recommended for most sticky lock issues, but I find it winds up on your keys, your pockets, your hands, etc.

I can't imagine what would happen to a lock that would make it sticky, slow, and require it's replacement? There are cars from the 50's with their original ignition switches that still work.

Got the whole new shebang from the dealer and it feels stiff all the time. Might be common. Anyway the plastics like stuff like plexus which has preserving agents while metal likes graphite. Wouldn't trust wd40 with plastics although it would dry up in short order after cleaning out whatever greese was installed from the factory Soooooooo good luck
