Bad CAT with CEL today :(
Guys, got a CEL this morning and bank 1 cat is bad my local Indy confirmed it so my options seem to be:
1. Fix under warranty as car infleet date is May 15th, 2004
2. 200 cell cats all around
3. Cat bypass (Thank you Florida = no emmisions)
What should I do? I have FisterD's on there now.
Car is 40th AE with x51 engine.
Leaning toward bypass but few questions:
How loud is it with FisterD's & cat bypass?
Do you have to do anything to avoid CEL's?
What bypass pipe is best?
Does it really smell that bad?

First: take three very deep breaths. Yep. GO ahead. Right now... really deeeeeep.
You can even drive it that way for a little while, while oxygen returns to your head.
Now, last year we had several threads here that will answer all of your questions.
Even though we don't have emissions inspections here in Florida, the next owner might in his state (Georgia, for example). If you have a chance to get essentially free cats under warranty, then DO IT. Everything else you asked about will cost you big money and/or make the car too loud to enjoy in South Beach. Unless you are tracking the car at PBIR regularly then skip the funky stuff and stick with a stock cat. And since it is only Bank 1, you really only need one cat for now.

So get this....
Car infleet May 15th, 2004 w/ 49k miles
emmissions warranty = 8yr/80k miles
Call Porsche @ The Collection and they say "umm yea no your out of warranty"
I say "umm, it's math 2004 + 8 = 2012"
Speak to manager: "umm, yea 8/80 in fleet date is correct but um, no computer says your car is only 7 years. WTF.
So they suggest call PCNA which I do and they reitterate the above
Then after i exlpain MATH!!!!! 4+8=12 they agree to open a case but of course they are out till 01/03

I'll tell you if you do go without cats the car's exhaust will stink when you pull it into your garage.
My cats have gone bad (gonna replace with the Fabspeed 200 cell soon) and my wife comments on the car stinking up the house now. So I have to let things air out before closing it all up.
Good luck with your fight!

Just had nearly the same situation. 2004 C2. Cat is rattling from what sounds like a loose chunk of ceramic, no CEL. I first read this : http://www.epa.gov/oms/consumer/warr95fs.txt , then visited the dealer. The Service manager confirmed the cat was bad, but had a printout (as in your situation) listing the emmissions warranty expiring on a date in 2011 (7 years), but on the same page stating that the warranty period is 8 years, 80,000 miles. He said he would call Porsche & let me know. I heard from him later that day confirmning there was coverage and I have an appointment for a free replacement. My point is there is room for optimism & I hope your situation resolves similarly. GL

Mark I so I am in EACTLY the same place. Dealer says the car has a 7 year warranty because was originally a California car? WTF? Isn't 8/80 a FEDERAL LAW. I printed that EPA ruling up and left it with car and we have now been going back and forth 2 days
How hard is FREAKING MATH!
2004 + 8 = 2012

I know, you know it and even the folks at Porsche know it but yet they can't seem to get past the damn red tape.
I don't know about "cats" but at least one better be replaced under warranty.

Miami C70: The California thing is definitley in play. My car was also originally titled & driven there until I bought it in '09. But, I had minor service @ the dealer (key programming) soon afterwards, which esablished a presence here for some time. If it's useful support for your position, I can scan & send you my dealer invoice which shows the cat replacement on Jan 3rd noted "no charge" & other docs, i.e. original title, etc.. Hope you get this sorted out.

Well, I am not there yet but after 2 days of teaching my local dealer a little MATH and a few calls to PCNA they have seemingly both agreed that 4 + 8 does in FACT = 12
So, they said bring her back on Monday and I get not one but two new CATS
