Default Rotors!

Hi guys,

Urgently need to replace my front rotors ... They are rusting very badly and are warped. Currently using pagid oe disc from porsche911.

Has anyone had any experience with what pelicanparts is selling?

1) Balo Coated
2) Zimmermans
3) Sebro coated

Which of these brands has the best anti rust coating?

Cheers

Using the Sebro on my 2001 996 and like them. I also had Zimmerman's on my 2004 Cayenne turbo and they worked well too...

As Chsu74 said, rusting is an effect of the car sitting for extended periods. Drive it for 10-15 mins and the rust will come off during normal braking. Not a reason to get rid of rotors. The warping, that's another issue.

Can't go wrong with Zimmerman. Had them on many cars and never had an issue. Zimmerman offers a coated rotor that is supposed to resist rusting.

Good luck.

Cheers,

FLi

I have Zimmermans and will again. Price, quality, and stopping are what I was looking for.

Have slotted Zimmerman's on my Passat and had good luck with them. They were zinc coated and resisted rust for about 2 years then they started to rust like standard rotors. Didn't effect performance. As stated just drive it and they will look like new.

You shoukld check in with Chris at LC Motorsports, (Vendor in here). He will give you the straight scoop on rotors and hook you up with the right product/right price for you and how you drive.

The only brake rotor I know of that will not rust is a PCCB rotor.

All cast iron (ferrous) rotors will develop rust from just sitting around. This rust comes off when the car is driven and the brakes are used.

Since you live in an area where brake rusting is problem you need to be a bit more aware of brake hygiene.

Try to remember to ride the brake pedal a bit as soon as you can to remove the rust. Release the pedal to allow the pads to come away from the rotor and shed any rust dust they have accumulated.

*Avoid* (if possible) emergency stops. What can happen is as you bring the car to an emergency stop the rotors/pads get very hot. When the car is brought to a stop there is some kind of pad material/rust deposition/transfer made to the rotors where the hot pads are left in contact with the hot rotor.

What then happens is the brakes pulse upon usage because this material transfer has modified the friction characteristic of the pad/rotor inteface at that spot the pads and rotors were in contact.

This is often attributed to warped rotors but real warpage is very rare.

(BTW, I forgot to follow my own advice and after washing a car (not my Porsche thank goodness) I let the car sit overnight. The next day I took the car out and before I had used the brakes any I had to make an emergency stop to avoid another vehicle. Of course I left the brakes applied. After the stop from then on the brake pedal would pulse slightly. I tried 'rebedding' in the brakes but it did not help. Fortunately the pulsing only occurred under very light braking which I avoid whenever possible and the brakes were still ok but pulsing slightly -- when I bothered to test for this condition's presence upon occasion -- when I sold the car with around 120K miles on it (and the original brakes). The buyer, a woman, immediately noticed the pulsing because she used the technique "apply the brakes every so lightly about 10 blocks from where the stop was".)

If the brakes have holes or slots be sure the holes remain free of brake dust and rust.

Sincerely,

Macster.

You can paint the rotor vents and hats with some quality high temp caliber/rotor paint. Helps considerably with rust. Example:

It is okay to get a little overspray on the area where the pads contact the rotor, it will rub right off after a quick drive

HAH, LOL Sean, my car is no where NEAR the concours winning quality of Orient Express' 996 (the picture above). Check out his car in below link! It is really amazing the detail he has gone through.

http://www.renntech.org/forums/garag...e__tab__images

Although I have done some "light" restoration work waiting for my engine to be balanced before I commence the rebuild.

Heads came back from resurfacing today.

Will post some pics soon.
