Price Check -1999 911 Tip Coupe
Need your help:
A good buddy of mine thinks that I am a good Porsche resource since I have owned a few. Never had a 996 c2, my last Porsche was a 996TT. He wants me to go with him to check out a 1999 c2 coupe with Tip.
What is the main things I can look for BEFORE he spends the money for a PPI.
Assuming there are not much records and the mileage is 100K+
I know about RMS and IMS issues, about looking for CEL and oil/coolant mis, etc.
Thanks
Price $13500

Given what you know about IMS, RMS, etc. the following jump to mind.
- Mileage? Sounds like it is high
- Records. All them is preferred with evidence of regular service
- Options (full leather, litronics, aerokit, etc.)
- Accident damage
- Version of expansion tank cap (should end in 04 I think) and colour of expansion tank - if it's yellowed it's old and will probably crack sooner or later
- The price seems low - not unheard of, but near the bottom of the range. I would suggest $18K to $22K is more common

The price is on the low end, but there are deals out there. I won't tell you what I paid for my '00 cab a year ago...!
Make sure that the PPI is performed at an Indy or dealer that knows ALL about the subtleties of the 996. They are very complex and can bite you in the wallet incredibly fast.
As long as the car is solid, I wouldn't worry too much about the mileage. Mine has 116k+ and is still going strong. If you are concerned about resale, then miles matter more, but on the other hand, if you are concerned about resale, you shouldn't own a 996 in the first place... they are to be driven and enjoyed.
Best of luck to your buddy in his search!

When you go with your friend, drive the Porsche, check that all windows operate, sunroof, gauges etc. Test the brakes, listen for sounds that may indicate wheel bearing issues, check tires to verify alignment, look in the engine compartment for signs of coolant leaks, esp. the coolant tank, look at engine oil level and color to see if it has been changed recently, and see if the car in is good overall condition that meets your standards and his. Most of this is fairly obvious no doubt. Good luck. Can't give you tranny advice but a Tip owner might chime in.

I agree with Stave (Barn)
you have owned a couple..if you would buy it...proceed - look over it with a fine toothed comb as if it was going to be yours, body fitment, paint, oil leaks, tires, interior,...i mean a cherap porsche may be cheap...but a rat hole will just be a PITA to own...if it's junk, step up a little and buy a nice one, in the long run its money well spent...
not saying this isnt a good car...just saying dont buy junk cuz its cheap
