Hi all, I'm new to rennlist and also a first time owner of a 996 C2...

Today I made the terrible mistake of backing up into a tight underground parking spot beside a concrete pillar which resulted in me completely scraping and denting the back of the car on driver side. Damage is ugly: about a foot of scraping on the side panel by the back wheel and it's dented in about half an inch.

Aside from kicking myself over this repeatedly, can anyone advise me on roughly how much this will cost to repair?

There are so many varibles here, there's no good way to estimate, just go check out your local body shops and get some estimates, you can go cheap with Macco quality or spend a fortune at high-end bodyshops, so it really is going to be dependent on the shops around your area.

I know how you feel though, have done something similarly stupid once but nowhere as bad, and still couldn't believe I actually did that.

I'm also reading about paintless dent repair (PDR) and it looks really cost effective. However, checking the damage on the car I can tell there is some deep scraping on the body. Has anyone had success with PDR and followed up with paint repair/filling?

I'm hoping I don't have to replace the entire side panel >_<

I'm farily familiar with PDR since I've used their service a few times over the years and a friend is a top notch PDR technician, the typical limitations are:
- No sharp creases
- No broken/damaged paint

While you did not provide any images, I would say your damage cannot be fully rectified through PDR, however by doing the maximum amount of PDR first will minimize the amount of body filler used in the repair at the expense of higher total repair cost.

As mentioned pics may help. See if you can post your area that you reside and ask other Porsche owners where they have gone for bodywork, resprays etc. GL with the fix. I think all of us have had similar experiences with avoidable accidents, and it does rather suck when it happens.

I know a guy here in Bellevue that just fixed a seal grey cab that scraped the entire side of the car - no paint...looked PERFECT when done....alot will depend on the damage...I can get you his info if you want it

I work in PDR as a side job and am opening my own company shortly. If you post a pic like mentioned I can tell you if you could work the dent in a beneficial way. But if there is a scrape, I would let the body shop handle the whole process.

I did this same thing to a rental car in Washington, DC one night after dinner. Just forgot I was in a bigger car and had my mind on other things and misjudged the distance to the concrete pillar.

It looked awful but I ended up using some rubbing compound to smooth out the paint and turned the car back in without incident

That panel of the car is not removable. The damage will have to be pulled out unless the damage is too bad then the bad section cut out and a new section welded in.

After pulling out the gouges dealt with.

And depending upon the car's color a good as before the collision condition repair can require adjacent body panels be resprayed to blend in the paint of the damaged section.

(Arctic Silver is based on my info the worst of the paints in this regard.)

But don't dispair. At least not yet. Find a top of the line body/paint repair shop one that is Porsche Approved Collision Center approved and have the damage cost to fix estimated.
