Just had the oil changed and kept the old cartridge. Dissected it at home to see what there was and found very little. Nothing metallic and only a 5 or 6 small 1mm x 1 to 2mm pieces of brown hard substance (almost like Bakelite). I suspect they are from the chain tensioner pads.
Engine is a factory re-manufactured 3.4L unit installed in 2007 and has about 40K miles on it.
Doesn't look particularly scary. If you are concerned clean out the housing and replace the filter and run the engine another 100 miles. Remove the filter again. What you find or don't find determines what you do next.
But just a few tiny fragments of what is chain guide/tensioner rail composite plastic debris in the oil filter like that is not sufficient to do much else, absent any other signs (noises mainly) of engine distress.
Of course while you are driving these next 100 miles (or 1000 miles or 10000 miles and so on) if the engine starts acting up, making noises, shut off the engine ASAP and do not restart it.

comforting
Dude the filter looks fine, drive it and no need to fret - next oil change do the same thing. if you ever get a bad one you wont need to ask us, you'll know
I was not worried about the engine, but rather curious to see what the cartridge looked like once I opened it up. It is good to know that the tensioner pads tend to do that and that it is overly concerning.
I did the oil change today after getting the car two months ago, the previous owner last changed the oil in July 2009 (!) and 5,000 miles ago.
I hadn't cut off the two ends of the cartridge to spread the filter material out yet, but I did looked through each fold under the sunny sky today and did not see any particles of any sort, phenolic or metal or otherwise.
