I saw this car before any 996 or 986 was produced for sale. The headlights were a focal point that I always liked and to this day thay remind of the awsome GT1.

On the series l 996, late '99 up without the amber signals, the headlights always looked great. Better than the later 996 and much better than the 997. I realize, I'm now in the minority, but share my foundness for the GT1 Le Mans racer headlights with many Porsche enthusiasts that carefully followed development prior and during the 993 and early 996 years.

If I was going to keep my Turbo for a long while and didn't care about resale, I'd fit the Mk l headlights, front fenders and hood and I believe I've seen a turbo bumper cover for the Mk l that would work. The Mk ll headlights were changed as a marketing move to distance the Carrera from the Boxster. Also a fresh look for the 996 Turbo, followed by all 996 models the next year.

The MKI lights look better, more aggressive. However, there are associated with "lower Porsches" such as Boxsters and the "bad 996's that looked like Boxsters". If you ask a kid or somebody that does not know Porsches, 8 times out of 10 they will like the MKI lights better...

I know that many 997 owners would want to trade that in because of the headlights....

Bingo! It is not the design of the headlights, but their common application to both 996 and 986. To be honest, I still struggle to identify a Boxster from a series 1 996 in the rear view mirror or with a quick glance at an oncoming Porsche.

And that does not mean there is anything wrong with the Boxster either. They are great cars. But when you paid for and drive a Carrera, you don't want that confusion.

No. I mean 'they' would trade in a GT1 because of its headlights, not those found on a 997.
