How many miles on your 996

I've seen numbers as high as 185K on the 996. Depends on a lot of things including the IMS bearing being the most significant failure reported. I am at 96K but on my second motor. First went at 45K and was replaced by Porsche due to an IMS failure. Cars that are not driven often seem to be at the highest risk but to date I have seen no empirical data to support all the claims on IMS failures and Porsche does not publish its engineering data. For me, I just drive it and enjoy the ride and don't worry about the "what ifs". Cheers, Tom
I might add, with 96K on the clock the car drives and sounds like new. No rattles, squeaks etc. Build quality is very high in my opinion!

your engine should last if the car has had frequent oil changes and proper maintenance. My car had oil changes every 6K miles or 6 months; whichever comes first. Recent overhaul leak down numbers came back less than 10% cold with 99K miles on the clock. This means around 6% leak down in a hot engine. It burns no oil between oil changes and runs like a top. The original IMS bearing looked great with a slight wear on the shaft but nothing serious. Keep up the maintenance and it is fine.

78000 miles and runs great!
Only major repair so far was rebuilding a noisy transmission (pinion bearing). Great repair done by GBOX in Colorado, super people to deal with!

I had the sunroof rattle also. I tracked it down to a support rod that runs behind the sunroof. I could feel thru the alcantara were it popped out from it's support clip on the passenger side. After a little finagling with it I was able to pop it back in without any damage to the material. So far the rattle has not returned. Cheers

2000 C4 Cabriolet with 121,000 miles. Yes, I proactively replaced the IMS. Also, replaced AOS and the valve chain guides. Engine runs great and the interior of the car is holding together well. Still enjoy driving it.

There are lots of guys out there well above the 100k mile mark and still having great things to say on their cars. I personally have not hit this mark yet but trying =)
Just make sure maintenance is up to date and do not neglect anything on the car

My '02 C2 is a DD and runs like a clock at 80,000 miles - it gets regular maintenance and has had no major issues. Built like a tank. (Wait, do tanks have an IMS?)
