Wow, that was unexpected! Any signs of the engine being rebuilt before you got the car, or is that a factory defect?
I am not that familiar with the process, but can it be left overs from the re-sleeving?
Just guessing here; I can imagine that a 50 degree piston temp difference could create all kinds of problems, from premature wear to excess carbon buildup...
Things like that scares me. Talk about needle in a haystack, that is a problem that you can throw tens of thousands at without resolving it. You are very fortunate to be able to do your own work, but still there are many hours spent there.

Not related to sleeving, the shard was there upon engine teardown. I don't think the engine had been apart before. I'm still waiting for pistons so I can have the engine balanced before starting the assembly.
Examining it a bit further, the outer edges of the hole opening makes it look like the shard may have been spinning around at some point. But when I got to it the shard was firmly entrenched in the jet opening.
Unscientifically, I blew compressed air through a good jet aimed at a sheet of paper and compared it with this damaged one. The damaged jet is allowing some air through, but it didn't seem to be as much as a new jet.
Pistons ship separately (provided by JE). They take a week to get to Cali from Chicago where LNE is. All in all the estimate of 5-6 weeks was pretty accurate.
