Default center console

i know our center consoles are notorious for the top coating peeling off. i've looked into doing the core trade deal with bumperplugs and getting a nice shiny painted to match the exterior one, but has anyone just tried scraping that coating off and ending up with basically a black console? would this look like utter dump? i saw once on a thread that a guy painted his himself -- i just don't think i could make that happen with my tiny brain/skill level... thought i'd bounce it off the brain-trust. thanks

that might have been me. The painting is pretty easy. You just have to be patient and do the prep right. The main problem is that it is too hot in Texas to paint right now unless you have an indoor area where you can spray paint.

now by pretty easy -- is that like learning to fly the shuttle is pretty easy? or... no really, can you walk me through the steps? i would imagine the prep is substantial. how has yours held up? i used to paint oil field equipment back in summers between semesters so how hard could it be right?

I'm a complete novice at painting things that need to look shiny, but I tried it and the results were very good. Unfortunately, I'm not happy with the color I bought so I will have to sand it down and do it again. This is a spare console that I bought on eBay for $55.

Good prep work and light coats work like magic.

wyovino, what paint did you use? any primer? is simply sanding that plastic (once the outer coating is off) enough? i'm thinking of starting with those surrounds on the side of the seat that get all scuffed up too. then if i screw that up it won't cost a fortune.
