Default 03 996 Key duplicate

Hi Folks,

I recently bought an 03 Targa and it came with just 1 key. I live in Madison, Wisconsin and inquired around to see if anyone can duplicate it. It sounds like dealers are the only ones equipped to do it. Called the local dealer and checked the price and they quoted 300 bucks. Any cheaper options out there?

Thanks!

I got a quote from a dealer in AZ for about the same. $200 for new key and cut. $75 to program. A key with remote fob would be about $100 more.
I'm going to check Ebay for the key.

Check ebay. There is a guy in England that you email him a picture of your key and he cuts the key blank for ~$30. People say it really works. You would still have to buy the transmitter head and get that programmed.

I ordered a blade from this shop in England http://keysinthepost.co.uk by emailing a digital snapshot of my key for ~$20 including postage. Arrived in a few short days & perfect fit. Keyhead from Suncoast, dealer programming - good to go. About $225 total. Do NOT buy a keyhead without the code tag...useless.

I have a 02/996. It came with 1 programmed key as well. At some point I will go to the dealer cough up $200+ and get a new full electronic key. But I live quite a way from the dealer and just haven't had a half-day to blow.

In the short term, I bought an OEM 996 blank ($20) and a lighted key head (at Eagle Day, $40) and took them to a local locksmith. He was able to easily cut a valet key ($30) which I use as spare. Works great. Total cost $90 and a half-day of time saved in the short term.

I had to go to several locksmiths as they need a particular machine called a "sidewinder" to do the work.
If your locksmith doesn't have one, they'll likely know who does. It's a small community.

Actually $300 from a dealer is a pretty good price.
Most people here report $400-500 at dealer

Thank you all for your responses.

rb101, Does the suncoast price include programming the key, cost of cutting, etc? If so, thats a very good price. I am going to call them in a bit.

No just the key dealer has to cut and program.

This is exactly what I want to do. Just have another spare key for emergency. I was not sure if the key is duplicated without being programmed, If it can open the door and turn on the ignition. From what you say, it sounds like it functions fine as a key but does not remotely lock/unlock (obviously because it is not programmed). Is that correct?

Also, since your key is not programmed, what is the need for the fob key head? Purely cosmetic appeal?

This is what I did. Had the cut blank in my hand in about a week. Works perfectly. Bought a Carrera GT head from Suncoast for about $150. So for about $180, I've got a full second key; it just needs to be programmed.

I was under the impression you had to have all the keys and the car at the dealership to get them programmed. How is suncoast going to program them from far away?

Yep that is correct. There are a few options on how you want your car programmed. For ex: when turning on the ignition it can be set to automatically turn on the ac or auto lock your doors after your driving at a certain speed.

Yep, I had the same question. Anybody have any experience doing it remotely (without the car being there)?
