Default 996 warranty?

hi,
just picked up my first porsche; 996 2003, cabriolet w. 31k miles. i bought it from a porsche dealer in chicago. they offered a warranty through Fidelity for $3500, 3 years, 36k miles. I just got the paperwork, so i want to read through it, carefully.

i took the car to a Porsche repair place that i heard of on Lake and Ashland. I wanted them to look it over... they were adamant that one should always buy the warranty, it will always pay for itself. If anyone has any opinions or insight, i'd be very thankful.

Unfortunately, there are so many things that can implode on these modern cars that can touch big dollars in no time. Read the warranty carefully and even call the company for clarification. It's great peace of mind. I purchased one on my new 997S to extend it to 100,000 miles, and 10 years.

the universal answer is... it depends.

If you are proactive about the maintence on your vehicle, and you have the history of the vehicle (dealer serviced its entire life?), then you might not need a warranty.

You could of had the IMS bearing, the RMS seal, a new clutch kit, and chain tensioners installed for what you paid for the 3 year warranty.

If you are handy (mechanically inclined), oil/air/cabin filter changes are easy and the spark plugs are doable. And maintence items aren't covered by your warranty anyway.

I've had my car since July of 09. It had 16 months left on the Porsche CPO warranty. It was a helpful when I had it but nothing dramatic went wrong with the car.

Just recently I have replaced the headlight switch, the door lock mechanism and 2 microswitches (the microswitches were not my problem unfortunately), and the car really isn't bad to work on.

Of course there are folks who have lost an engine (and more rarely a trans) that swear by their warranties.

To each there own.

Enjoy and good luck.

If it is your 1st Porsche then buy the warranty. If you think your car payment are high. Get the warranty. You can easily throw $1500 to $2500 in a repair at these cars.

I didn't buy a warranty when I bought my 996. I haven't regretted that decision.

I did buy an extended warranty when I bought my Cayenne. It was close to $3K. I never used it. Not once. I shouldn't have bought it.

Exactly! On average you lose financially. However, peace of mind is worth something.

The warranty is like self insurance. how much liability/expense are you ready to assume.

For example, how comfortable are you to have a $5k deductable on your car insurance or $15K on your home and save the difference in a lower premium, if you calculate how much you could save over your lifetime in assuming more risk, the number will boggle your mind...

I dislike insurance companies, and would like to pay them as little as possible.....

hi, thanks very much for taking the time to help. i'm unclear about "do a search"

the dealer gave me 2 options, fideltity and AON. To be honest, it seems a little fishy -cause the dealer wasn't totally forthcoming about my options and i had pretty much pry the terms and conditions out of him. anyway, thanks again!

Call and ask the service department which one is easier to deal with. That is the one you want to buy.

A car with only 4k miles on it per year, yeah definitely get the warranty. The worst that could happen is your engine can go bad, which cost $15k, pretty much everything else is less than $3500 until you get up past your 80k miles mark at which your tranny may give you problems.

I sort of felt like the warranty I bought for the Cayenne was me saying to the dealer: "I'll bet you $3,000 that this car needs a major repair before it hits 80,000 miles". His response was: "I'll take that bet, and I'll even pay for the repair if it breaks!"

He won the bet in my case...
