Years ago when the 911 engine was a tiny thing (2.0 litre, 2.2, 2.4, 2.7), you had to use much of the rpm to get any power out of the engine. They would 'come on the cam' above 4000 rpm and you had to pay closer attention to the power production areas of the engine speed. However, as these engines have grown in size to 3.6 and now 3.8 litre, they have significantly more torque than ever before, so you don't have to work them as hard to get power production. Don't LUG the engines, but you don't need to wind it up each and every time. Find that happy medium. Most who are new to Porsche usually are hesitant to allow their rpms to go very high. Old timers will use the engine rpm band to extract power from the engine.
