Default Magnetic Drain Plug

Just received this today in the mail. Bad part is that I just changed oil about a month ago; didn't think of it until a week ago to put this in. Oh well!!

Must say, a very quality piece. Made of steel vs. alum. like LNE.

You also get a free thread depth gauge... woo..hoo!!!

Hmm Good find!

I like this, couldn't believe LN touts how much better theirs is but it's still made of aluminum. Not to mention they want 10 bucks for shipping of a drain plug....I can't get over that part.

Some guys on performance engines like to add the magnetic drain plugs. For our newer sport bikes made with titanium valves and other parts and aluminum cases, rods, pistons and cylinders there really isn't any iron to be magnetic in the engines. I am not sure if porsche uses alloy rings and bearings for the engines but I do wonder what is iron in the engine internals. Anybody know?

Crankshaft, cams, oil pump, chains and their gears, various internal bolts. Plenty on ferrous material to go around.

I have two questions for the people that have a magnetic plug...

How much metal is actually collected on this thing? Is it worth it?

I put mine on with the last oil change I did. I hope i don't find much metal when I do the next oil change.

Just did my first oil change with the magnetic drain plug, hard to say "how much metal actually collected", but it was obvious that "metal powder" was on it, gray in color (but I think I saw some "glitter" in the sun).

I wiped it clean and quickly passed a stronger magnet in front of it (hoping to pull off all the metal particles).

I repeat, it was obvious there was some, how much?, I do not know.

It covered the whole surface of the magnet, and was < 0.25mm (to use a number) in thickness.

Here's a tip. Just buying the drain plug? Buy this from pelican parts, less expensive shipping.

Porsche put magnetic drain plugs on their cars for years. Unfortunately in trying to cut costs they did away with them on the Boxster and 996 (997 too?).

My 84 has one each on the oil tank and engine case. All aircraft, turbine and piston, use them, you should have one on your car.

So which thread size is the one for the plain 3.4L 996 C2?

Thanks
