Default Ignition lock repair question

My '02 996 Targa is having what seems to be a fairly common problem. The ignition key is bulky in the lock, is sometimes hard to remove and put back, and sometimes the car still thinks the key is in the lock after I remove it.

There is pretty good DIY info on changing either just the VW/Audi electronic switch for $10 to $15 or changing the whole assembly for more like $120:

MY question is for those that have any input on whether I really need to do the whole assembly, or whether just replacing the switch is adequate?

Switch is adequate most of the time. For less than $20 and ~1/2 hour why not try it first?

So many in e-bay, this is just a sample. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Key-I...Q5fAccessories
Changed mine in about 30 minutes. There is a step by step procedure on how to do it. You do need to be a contortionist with smaller hands to do it. Otherwise its a pita to change it.

Thanks for the responses. Fortunately it's not a daily driver, so I can take a few days to sort things out. I was afraid I'd be stranded this morning though--could barely get the key out, and the dash kept saying "Key not removed!" even though it was, in fact, removed. From what I've read, it can be scary how much the dealers charge for a fix.

Dealers will not do just the electrical part anymore. Porsche instructs only total steering wheel lock+ign is correct. Try NAPA part # 4A 0905849B or EBay or Audi Or VW

Thanks. I found the part OK, and pretty cheap, on both Amazon and Ebay. I think I'm going to do the whole assembly. Why? It looks harder and I'm a glutton for punishment!

Actually, I've heard of some people doing the switch twice, so I'm hoping to replace the whole assembly and be done with it.

I have heard of the switch in the new unit failing also. YMMV
