Mobil 1 for $5 and my 37 minute oil change
Went to a NAPA today and found that Mobil 1 was on sale for only $4.99 a quart!
So of course I stocked up and went home to change my oil (I was planning on doing it last week but went to the beach instead). This time I decided to time myself from start to finish just to see how long it takes.
Now remember I don't have a lift and I'm talking from the time that I walk out of the door to my garage to the point where I turn the car on. In total the time was 37 minutes! Not bad considering how much oil you need to dump in the engine and the fact that I was using a pretty small funnel.
How about all of you, how long does it take you to change oil on your 996?

How do you lift your car for underside access ? I was thinking to get a racing Jack from Harbor Freight and lift the car onto wheel ramps at the rear wheels - good enough to do the job ?

Yes, that only takes about 2-3 minutes to complete. It could be faster but the thing is so hot it burns my hands when handling it even through my gloves.
Yeah I should have had some beers handy considering how hot it was under that car!
I used a jack right in front of the passenger-side rear wheel. Then I placed a jackstand under the suspension point on that same tire and jacked up the car just enough to allow me enough clearance to place the oil drain pan under the car and get my allen wrench in there to undo the drain plug. So the weight of the car was mostly on the jack while the jackstand was there for safety. All of this was done without removing the tire so that's another measure of safety as well.

Good job! We all know that less time under the car means more time in it. Don't want to be Debbie Downer (I prefer Dirk over Debbie).......please don't depend on a floor jack to support your car while under it. If the jack came down while underneath the tire is not going to save you.....the clearance is not enough and you are a gonner. Please use jackstands at each wheel.

I also did the Napa Auto parts $4.99 a quart oil change this weekend.
Took me a bit longer - first time on my 996.
I love the oil fill being able to snap out of the holder and bend up for the refill - no funnel needed
I also cut open the filter to inspect - nothing found - very clean

But thanks for the reminder for anyone planning on not doing the same!
Thanks for the tip. I should go and buy another couple of cases since I'll be changing the oil again after the summer months.

NICE
my yard is flat and I live on a cul-de-sack with a 4-5 inch curb...I can drive into my front yard and back up so the ars hangs over the curb..then I dont even need a jack...slide the pan in and pull the plug.
the only thing I have to be careful of is one time I did it after driving with the motor at normal operating temp....the exhaust scorched my grass... as you can see in my red car avatar pic, I giot it greened up again
