Actually, as you are in the UK I would recommend the June issue of 911 and Porsche World for a very concise review of the strengths and weaknesses of the 996. It will also point to you back issues with detailed articles on how to buy a 996.
Searching this site is also a good idea.

Total 911 has good info on buying a used 996. The mag runs buying guides every so often or you can seek out a back issue or issues with articles on the models you are interested in.
Sincerely,
Macster.

Oh brother. I had to look it up but still, oh brother. Glad you are better.
Anyhow, about your car questions.
Briefly, you're looking at a used car so a good thorough used car check out is going to help you id any car you should avoid buying.
A good used car checkout can take a couple of hours and the check list can run two pages.
For specifics, well,... there's RMS (rear main seal). The biggest issue is this can leak though the leak is very very rarely severe.
IMS (intermediate shaft but mainly IMS is a short-hand way of referring to the ball bearing at the back (transmission) end of the engine). If this bearing fails (and they do, oh yes they do fail: Porsche forums are full of discussions on this) almost always the engine's toast and if the engine/car out of warranty.. Big big repair bill.
Unfortunately there's no way to know ahead of time if the IMS bearing is going to fail. Sometimes an owner gets a bit of break and the thing gets noisy and he shuts off the engine and takes the car to a shop and the proper diagnosis is made and the engine is removed, torn down, and the damage (confined to the IMS shaft, bearing, and maybe a camchain guide) repaired and the engine put back together and put back into the car.
Now some company is working on has almost ready to release some IMS early warning system. I know nothing more about this. The owner of the company has posted something on this on one of the forums (maybe this one).
L&N Engineering is I think the company. http://www.lnengineering.com
Another company's web site to visit is: http://www.flat6innovations.com
These sites have more info on RMS and particularly IMS issues along with the other possible problems these engines can experience.
If you're in the UK Hartech is a good source of info and there's another company over there the name escapes me -- Autofarm! -- that also deals in these cars and the problems these engines can develop. I'm sure both companies' web sites have info that you might find interesting. Maybe a bit scary but interesting nonetheless.
There are several indy Porsche mag writers that also offer PPI (pre-purchase inspection) services for UK buyers. Total 911 and 911 & Porsche mags will have ads by these people. There's another mag: GT and Purely Porsche (IIRC) that is a good Porsche mag.
The above should get you going.
Sincerely,
Macster.
