Be careful what part number you order. IIRC there is a slightly different one depending on your MY car. Something about the curvature of the script and rear deck lid or something.
Have you considered vinyl? You could have any designation you wanted in any color and/or script and size that suits you. It would never crack and you could easily (and cheaply) replace it whenever you wanted.
I have lapis blue and I switched to the silver Carrera badge, which I think looks better.
My car has the badge above the bend in the deck lid, but I've noticed that some have it below the bend. Which do you have, and did you mount the replacement in the same place?
I'm wondering if there are different part numbers or if they only make the newer version (for lower mounting).

Mine (like all 1999-2001 models) came lwith the badge above the bend in the deck, so that's where I put the replacement silver badge. The problem was that the replacement I bought at the local dealer was meant for the below the bend. They are different because the top of the "C" in Carrera is supposed to curve back (away from you) to follow the contour in the deck for the above-bend mounting location. If you get the one for the bottom, the "C" sticks up toward you. The part numbers are as follows:
Carrera logo in silver: 996-559-237-07-4PU (for 1999-2001); 996-559-237-10-4PU (for 2002-2004).
I did this in 2005, so I don't know if they've now discontinued the 1999-2001 version.
One more possibility is to get the beautiful gold plated metal Carrera scripts used on the 356 series Carreras. Large for the rear, or small from the front fender sides, are both still available. May look good on green, especially if you have a tan interior, and would provide the contrast you are looking for.
File off the mounting pins (so you don't have to drill holes in your rear deck lid), and use a sheet of the same type of 3M double-sided tape used for the plastic scripts. Just use a sharp blade to trace around the metal script (before mounting, of course - LOL!).
I did what I wanted and I'm really happy with the subtile look , black 911 on black. I really didn't like to advertise to the world that I'm driving a Turbo, and disliked it even more in chrome on black.
You my be right on the years of Up or Down Script placement on C2's... But my 2000 C4 has the "Carrera 4" in Silver mounted low. But then it also has a Silver & Black Hood Crest that is uncommon as well. Maybe MY2000 Exclusive option on the US C4 ??? Or maybe mine is a Dealer optioned car.
Mark - I would like to know more about this 996 GT package you mentioned. Was that Trim or Performance - interior or Exterior - like the GT3 Aero?
