Fuel Door Hinge Spring DIY
Before i go pulling things off and breaking it. Has anyone done this repair or have a link to a DIY. I want to replace the Spring in the Door as it does not stay open anymore.
This is the Part http://www.pelicanparts.com/cgi-bin/...5%29%2C%20Each
I guess it requires removed the Fuel Door Hinge, does it just pull out? or is there Clips?
Help is much appreciated as i cant Hold the Door Open while putting in gas and scratiching my ***** at the same time. Thanks

Mine was broke also so I bought a new hinge and a spring. I believe there is 2 or 3 clips on the hinge that you have to press and wiggle out. I ended up breaking the all the clips on the old one...take your time to see where the clips are ....i still don't know where/how the spring goes in so....i still have a nonfunctioning gas door...

the hinge is hard to remove without cracking or breaking the tabs as said above. I would order the hinge ahead of time just incase ($14.00 part last time I checked). I tried to carefully remove mine and it cracked. Maybe the fuel/fumes makes the plastic more brittle.

I did this. Take a look at the instructions in the attached link.

Getting the old door off is not easy. When I removed mine, it sort of went flying. Luckily, I had taped the paint on the gas door and all surrounding areas with duct tape. I would also tape the door to the body somehow so it doesn't fly in some unexpected direction. If you can get someone to hold the gas door while you pry it, that will help tremendously. Getting it back on involves less drama.

Ah, I need some quick help! I new I needed a new hinge so I ordered one, and thought the 996 number was superseded by a 997 number. The 997 hinge does not fit though! It hits where the tether attaches. Has anyone had this problem? Currently I have no means of attaching my fuel door, since I have a broken 996 hinge, and a non fitting 997 hinge Thanks in advance.

New vs. old hinge
The new hinge I bought fits fine if you remove the plastic rivet holding the gas cap tether. I'm planning to buy a new nylon rivet & attach to the hole in the center of the metal bracket (behind the hinge spring) instead of at the bottom where it had been previously attached.

Next time you are filling up, look around for a nice looking woman and see if the gas door on her vehicle is open on it's own. If she is not busy scratching her *** or ****, ask her would she mind scratching your ***** while you fill your tank. A handsome looking guy would be ok I suppose at a pinch, but if he is an ugly looking guy you could always ask him to hold your gas door open while you scratch your own *****. Problem solved. haha.

Why on earth would you want the tether? Are you that absent-minded that you're actually going to drive off without your gas cap? And it you did, isn't it better to go back and retrieve it from the gas station rather than have the gas cap bang around your on car's body?
I removed mine as soon as I bought the car. I pried out the plastic plug that attaches to the car, and then snipped the edge of the ring around the gas cap to which the tether attached and slipped it off the gas cap. Now you'd never be able to tell that there was ever a tether there.
